BOTOX® Cosmetic

If you’re experiencing dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial muscle movement, BOTOX may be an effective option to help smooth those lines. As a minimally invasive injectable, it temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, addressing common areas like the forehead, crow’s feet, and between the eyebrows. At San Diego Aesthetics & Med Spa in La Mesa, CA, BOTOX can be used to reduce the appearance of these lines without surgery.

Many patients choose BOTOX for its quick treatment time and the fact that it requires little to no downtime. The benefits of this treatment extend to a variety of concerns related to muscle activity and is a versatile option for patients with different aesthetic goals.

What Is BOTOX?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription drug that, when injected, temporarily paralyzes muscles. It contains a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin A, which is produced by the microbe that causes botulism. Manufactured by Allergan, Inc., it is used to treat permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles. In addition to its cosmetic applications, it is used to treat a number of medical problems, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back and jaw pain, and migraines.

How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX works by blocking the signals between your nerves and muscles. Normally, your nerves send chemical signals to your muscles, causing them to contract and form wrinkles. When BOTOX is injected into specific muscles, it temporarily disrupts this process by preventing the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Without these signals, the muscle can no longer contract as strongly, which allows the skin above it to relax and smooth out.

This temporary muscle relaxation doesn't affect overall muscle function; it simply reduces movement in targeted areas. The effects typically last for several months, after which muscle activity gradually returns to normal as the BOTOX wears off.

Applications for BOTOX Cosmetic

Although originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of eye and muscle spasms, BOTOX Cosmetic was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value. Properly placed injections of BOTOX Cosmetic block nerve impulses sent to muscles, weakening them to the point where they cannot contract, and temporarily eliminating moderately severe furrows and lines. BOTOX Cosmetic is used to treat the following:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow's feet
  • Skin bands on the neck

According to Allergan, BOTOX Cosmetic has been "extensively researched, with approximately 2500 studies."

What Are the Benefits of BOTOX?

BOTOX Has a Long-Standing Reputation

With decades of use in both cosmetic and medical fields, BOTOX has proven its reliability. Patients have trusted this treatment for years to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, thanks to its consistent results. This injectable remains a go-to solution for those seeking non-surgical wrinkle reduction.

No Incisions or Stitches

Since BOTOX is delivered through tiny injections, there’s no need for incisions or stitches, which means no scars or lengthy recovery periods. Patients can return to their daily activities almost immediately after treatment.

Prevents Future Wrinkles

Regular BOTOX treatments do more than smooth existing lines; they can help slow the formation of future wrinkles. By limiting repetitive muscle movements that cause wrinkles, this injectable can keep skin looking smoother for longer, making it a preventative as well as a corrective option.

Can Be Customized

Each patient’s treatment can be adjusted to suit their specific concerns. The amount of BOTOX used and the areas treated are tailored to individual goals, allowing for subtle or more pronounced results, depending on what’s desired.

Quick Appointments

Appointments for BOTOX injections typically take just 10 to 20 minutes, making it easy to fit into even the busiest schedules. With minimal downtime required, many patients receive treatment during a lunch break and return to their day right afterward.

BOTOX Cosmetic Procedure and Results

Using a very fine needle, BOTOX Cosmetic is injected directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. Receiving the injections requires no anesthetic, but some doctors choose to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or a topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment, and typically last up to four months, although areas that are treated on a regular basis may retain results longer. Injections should be given only by qualified medical professionals.

Side Effects of BOTOX Cosmetic

Injection-site side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are usually mild and temporary, and include the following:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Normal activities may be resumed immediately after receiving injections.

Your BOTOX Treatment

Preparing for Treatment

Before receiving BOTOX, it’s important to avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase the risk of bruising. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, and fish oil, among others. Your provider may recommend pausing these for about a week before your appointment. On the day of treatment, it’s best to arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, lotions, or creams. If you have any specific concerns or medical conditions, make sure to discuss them with your provider ahead of time to ensure the treatment plan is suited to your needs.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

The appointment typically begins with a consultation where your provider will assess the areas you want to treat and discuss your goals. We may also take “before” pictures and we may have you make certain facial expressions to watch how your dynamic wrinkles form. After determining the right approach, a very fine needle is used to inject BOTOX into the targeted muscles. The number of injections depends on the area being treated, but the process is quick. Most patients report feeling only a mild pinch or discomfort, as the needle is small. There’s no need for anesthesia, and you’ll be able to leave shortly after the session.

Caring for Your Skin After Treatment

After your BOTOX treatment, it’s best to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for the first 24 hours to prevent the solution from spreading to unintended muscles. You should also avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot tubs for at least a day, as increased blood flow can affect the results. Mild swelling or redness at the injection sites is normal and should subside within a few hours. Your provider may also advise against lying down for the first few hours post-treatment to allow the BOTOX to settle properly in the injected areas.

Comparing BOTOX to Other Neuromodulators

  • Dysport®: Like BOTOX, Dysport is a botulinum toxin injection, but it has a slightly different formulation. Dysport spreads more easily, making it a good option for larger areas like the forehead. It may also take effect slightly faster than other neuromodulators, with visible results appearing in 2 to 3 days.
  • Xeomin®: Xeomin is considered a "naked" version of BOTOX because it doesn’t contain any accessory proteins. This means it delivers pure botulinum toxin, which could reduce the risk of developing resistance over time. It also tends to work in the same timeframe as BOTOX, with results typically lasting three to four months.
  • Jeuveau®: Jeuveau is often called “newtox” because it’s a newer neuromodulator. It works similarly, focusing on reducing dynamic wrinkles, and has comparable duration and results. Jeuveau is primarily marketed for cosmetic use, while BOTOX is also used for various medical conditions.
  • Daxxify®: Daxxify is unique in that it has a longer-lasting effect compared to other neuromodulators, with results that can last up to 6 months or more. It uses a novel peptide technology to extend the duration, which makes it appealing for those looking for longer intervals between treatments.

We offer both BOTOX and Dysport, giving you options based on what you are looking for from the treatment and which product would be best for you.

FAQs About BOTOX

How Long Does It Take for BOTOX to Work?

BOTOX typically starts working within three to five days after your treatment, but full results are usually visible around 10 to 14 days. The timing can vary slightly depending on the area treated and how your body responds to the injections. Patients may notice a gradual softening of lines as the muscles relax.

How Long Does BOTOX Last?

The effects of BOTOX usually last around three to four months. After that time, muscle movement will slowly return, and wrinkles may start to reappear. Consistent treatments can help maintain smoother skin over time. Your provider will work with you to create a treatment schedule that aligns with your goals.

Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?

Ideal candidates for BOTOX are adults looking to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, such as forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. It’s suitable for most patients, though individuals with certain neuromuscular disorders or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding may need to avoid this treatment. A consultation with your provider will determine if BOTOX is right for you.

Will My Face Freeze After BOTOX Injections?

A properly administered BOTOX treatment will not freeze your face. When done by an experienced provider, the treatment will soften wrinkles while still allowing for natural facial expressions. The amount of BOTOX used is carefully controlled to target specific muscles without affecting overall facial movement.

Is BOTOX Toxic?

While BOTOX is derived from botulinum toxin, a protein produced by the bacteria that cause botulism, it is formulated in very small, safe amounts for medical and cosmetic use. The effects are localized to the treatment area, and systemic side effects are extremely rare. When administered by a trained professional, BOTOX is both safe and effective for reducing wrinkles.

What Is the Difference Between Dermal Fillers and BOTOX?

While BOTOX is ideal for smoothing dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement, dermal fillers are designed to restore lost volume and fill in deeper wrinkles. These two treatments work in harmony to provide a more comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation. While BOTOX focuses on relaxing muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles, dermal fillers address issues like volume loss in the cheeks, lips, and under-eye areas.

Fillers such as JUVÉDERM, Restylane, and Radiesse can plump up sunken areas, soften deeper folds like nasolabial lines, and enhance facial contours. When combined with BOTOX, the result is a smoother, more youthful appearance that tackles both wrinkles and volume loss.
