Exploring the Benefits: What Is PRF Treatment and How Does It Work?

Regenerative medicine has evolved, and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is at the forefront of this type of medicine, offering a natural approach to healing and rejuvenation. At San Diego Aesthetics & Med Spa in La Mesa, CA, we use PRF to address a variety of concerns, from enhancing skin quality to combating hair loss.

We are proud to be a small, woman-owned establishment, focusing on delivering subtle, natural-looking results. By integrating PRF treatments, we can help patients achieve noticeable improvements without invasive procedures. Our approach is patient-focused, and we always make sure that your care is effective while aligning with your individual aims.

The Basics of PRF Treatments

What Is PRF?

Platelet-rich fibrin is a type of regenerative therapy that uses your own blood to promote healing and rejuvenation. PRF leverages natural components that are found in your blood, supporting tissue regeneration and healing at the cellular level.

How Is PRF Different From PRP and Dermal Fillers?

While PRF injections are similar to platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapies, there are distinct differences. PRF maintains a higher concentration of leukocytes (white blood cells) and a unique fibrin matrix, which gradually releases growth factors over time. This can result in a longer-lasting effect compared to PRP.

While dermal fillers and PRF can both be used to restore volume to specific areas, dermal fillers typically consist of synthetic, biocompatible substances. PRF injections, however, enrich the skin’s own healing abilities and improve texture and tone without introducing materials besides those that your body makes. Both can be effective but may be used for different purposes.

A Closer Look at the Natural Components of PRF

  • Platelets:  Platelets are important in your body for healing and tissue regeneration. They release proteins and growth factors that initiate repair at a deeper level.
  • Fibrin: Central to a PRF treatment is fibrin, a fibrous protein that forms a scaffold to support platelets and growth factors. This network not only holds the healing components in place but also provides a structure for new tissue to grow, aiding in the natural healing process.
  • Growth Factors: These proteins are responsible for signaling cells to function in healing and regeneration. They help to improve blood supply and form new cells, making them a fundamental component in the natural repair and rejuvenation processes of the body.

How PRF Is Obtained

Platelet-rich fibrin is obtained through a simple and comfortable process. A small vial of blood is taken from the patient, similar to a routine blood test. Then we put the blood sample into a centrifuge machine, where we spin it to separate the different components of the blood.

This sample is centrifuged at a lower speed compared to the process used for platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which preserves a richer concentration of platelets, white blood cells, and fibrin. PRF preparation also does not require additional substances like additives or anticoagulants during the separation or preparation process. Next, the platelet-rich fibrin layer is isolated and prepared for use in the treatment, either in a syringe for injection or for topical application.

How PRF Works

The Role of Growth Factors in Tissue Regeneration and Wound Healing

In PRF therapy, growth factors help with tissue regeneration and wound healing. These naturally occurring substances in the body signal healing at the site of injury or damage, promoting the formation of new tissues. Growth factors derived from PRF speed this process, enhancing skin rejuvenation, wound closure, and tissue repair.

The Benefits of PRF’s Slow Release

One benefit of platelet-rich fibrin treatment is the slow release of growth factors and other healing elements. This prolonged release provides a steady supply of regenerative components to the targeted area, allowing for a more sustained and effective healing process compared to treatments that deliver these elements quickly. The extended interaction between the healing components and the treated tissues allows for better integration and natural rejuvenation, leading to improved outcomes in tissue repair and aesthetic enhancements.

The Different Applications of PRF

Restoring Hair

PRF injections can help in the rejuvenation of thinning hair by stimulating the scalp’s natural healing processes. This approach introduces growth factors directly into the scalp, fostering a healthier environment for hair follicles and encouraging new hair growth. Patients may notice improvements in hair density and strength over the course of several treatments.

Regaining Facial Volume

The application of platelet-rich fibrin injections in the form of PRF EZ Gel provides a natural alternative for regaining facial volume. By using the patient’s own biological material, these injections can help restore lost volume and promote healthier, more youthful-looking skin. The unique preparation process of PRF EZ Gel allows for a substance that is similar to a dermal filler, and it can be used in areas like under the eyes and cheeks to restore volume right away with added long-term benefits.

Minimizing Fine Lines and Wrinkles

PRF therapy is effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Platelet-rich fibrin injections rejuvenate the skin by improving texture and elasticity, leading to a smoother and more refined complexion. This approach encourages the skin to repair itself, gradually reducing signs of aging.

Enhancing the Results of Other Treatments

Combining platelet-rich fibrin with treatments like SkinPen® microneedling and PiXel8-RF microneedling can enhance overall results. PRF acts as a powerful adjunct, improving the healing response and effectiveness of these treatments. The synergy between microneedling and PRF leads to more significant improvements in skin texture, tone, and firmness.

Enhancing the Healing Process

PRF treatments are important for enhancing the healing of wounds or skin irritations. By providing a high concentration of growth factors and fibrin directly to the affected area, platelet-rich fibrin treatments can help accelerate the body’s natural healing processes. This is particularly beneficial for patients looking to recover more quickly from skin injuries or post-treatment reactions.
